Physical discomfort is your body’s way of communicating to you that something isn’t quite right. When it comes to toothaches, there are varying degrees of pain, and depending on the severity, they can be easy to shrug off. If you’re experiencing excess sensitivity or aching in one or more of your teeth, it’s extremely important that you don’t ignore it. Keep reading to learn the signs and symptoms of a toothache and what can happen if you don’t address it.

Signs of a Tooth Infection

Typically, an ache in your tooth means that there is decay present. In most cases, seeing a dentist for a filling will solve the problem immediately. Unfortunately, there are many people who will simply ignore tooth pain for a multitude of reasons. Not addressing a toothache can cause the decay to worsen and eventually become severely infected. This infection can then spread to the rest of the body. Here are some tell-tale signs of infection caused by tooth decay:

  • Feeling Ill: headaches, dizziness, fatigue
  • Running a Fever: excessive sweating, chills, flushed skin
  • Swelling of the Face: difficulty swallowing, breathing, or opening the mouth
  • Dehydration: feeling of disorientation, reduced urination, darker urine
  • Increased Heart Rate: rapid pulse or lightheadedness
  • Upset Stomach: vomiting or diarrhea

While these symptoms are common with many other sicknesses, it’s important to note that if they accompany a severe toothache, it’s time to treat it as an emergency.

What Happens if You Don’t Treat a Tooth Infection?

Leaving an infection in your tooth untreated can have serious consequences. It might seem strange to think that your mouth can have such an impact on the rest of your body, but here are some of the very dangerous illnesses that a tooth infection can lead to if it is not dealt with:

  • Sepsis: This occurs when the bacteria present in the infected tooth finds its way into the bloodstream. The immune system is then compromised, making it much easier to contract other infections, which could eventually lead to heart disease or stroke.
  • Respiratory Problems: If the bacteria from the infected tooth gets into the lungs, it can spread rapidly, causing breathing to become difficult.
  • Meningitis: There are more ways than one to contract meningitis, and tooth infections have actually been linked as a cause. This illness causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes and can be extremely life-threatening.
  • Ludwig’s Angina: This is an illness that you may not have heard of before, as it is not as common as the previous issues. It can cause severe swelling of the throat, making it difficult to breathe and speak.

Now that you know the signs of a tooth infection and how serious it can become, make sure that you schedule a dental appointment as soon as possible to talk to your dentist about how they can help treat you if you are experiencing tooth pain.
